Birds and Botanicals Take Center Stage During Mount Desert Island Festival

 BAR HARBOR, Maine - Humans aren't the only ones who find MountDesertIsland a pleasant place to spend the summer months. Southern visitors with wings make the flight to the island each spring, when the varied vegetation and flora also makes its appearance. This combination makes the island the perfect place for the annual Warblers and Wildflowers Festival. This year's event takes place May 24-28 in the town of Bar Harbor and multiple locations in AcadiaNational Park. Guided birding and educational tours will be offered to view and learn about many species of warblers, woodpeckers, sea birds and wetland birds. Tours and talks will also be given at the island's famous public Thuya and AsticouGardens. Special guests will offer lectures and workshops on bird species and horticulture topics. Summer in Maine Starts in Portland's Old Port

PORTLAND, Maine - The city of Portland's Old Port district is always a best bet for live music or a fun gathering spot. Every year before the official start of summer the historic district becomes one big block party with the Old Port Festival. The 34th edition of the event takes place Sunday, June 3. The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. with a parade featuring the giant puppets and characters, dancing stilt walkers and lively drumming of the Shoestring Theater. Live performances on 10 stages throughout the district will please fans of country, rock, world and other music genres. There will also be a children's entertainment stage and activity area. Arts and crafts vendors and a selection of foods from around the world are also part of the festival. Maine International Film Festival Marks 10 years

WATERVILLE, Maine - The stars will return to Waterville July 13-22 for the 10th Annual Maine International Film Festival. More than 80 of the best American, independent, international, and Maine-made films will be shown. Screenings take place at the 940-seat Waterville Opera House and the nearby Railroad Square Cinema, one of 14 Art House Project theaters designated by the Sundance Institute. Featured guest filmmakers will introduce and discuss their work. The Fireflies project will provide live music, films and workshops for children. Other activities include opening and closing ceremonies, galas, special receptions and the presentation of the festival Mid-Life Achievement Award which in past years has gone to Ed Harris, Sissy Spacek and Jonathan Demme.
