Maine Office of Tourism - It Must Be Maine™

Promoting Maine as a

Premier Cruise Destination

The CruiseMaine Coalition annually participates in the SEATRADE Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami. During this trade show, we sponsor the Cruise Line International Association's Executive Partner Reception in their booth. At this reception we offer everyone a special Taste of Maine featuring delicacies made from fresh Maine lobster, potatoes and blueberries.

All of the CruiseMaine ports are supported by the individual marketing efforts of their communities, local tourism associations, chambers of commerce as well as the regional tourism association covering each geographical area. These efforts include

travel trade show attendance, print media, and travel writer initiatives and can be identified by contacting these organizations as listed on each community's Port Information page on this web site.

The Maine Office of Tourism's role in promoting Maine as a premier destination attracts out of state visitors by portraying, through advertising and media promotion, an array of attractions, amenities and activities accessible throughout the state. Cooperatively Cruise Maine and the Office of Tourism seek to produce higher volumes of visitors from an expanded geographic area and during shoulder and off-peak seasons.

The Office of Tourism recognizes the significance of the cruise industry's contribution relevant to home port operations and the impact of shore side ship services, the pre and post stays of passengers on the coastal cruising. The port of call business of the larger cruise ships generates enormous shoulder season economic impacts with their fall cruise programs.

The Maine Office of Tourism (MOT) is a state government agency operating as a division of the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). The MOT was established in 1983 to promote tourism into Maine. Currently, the MOT seeks to attract out of state visitors by portraying through advertising and media promotion an array of attractions, amenities and activities, from the mountains and lakes to coastal areas which may be enjoyed in different seasons of the year. In other words, the MOT promotes a composite image of Maine in its entirety to attract the attention of potential visitors from outside the borders of the state.

The Maine Tourism Association (MTA) is a private nonprofit membership organization dedicated to promoting the interests of its membership, most of whom are tourism-related businesses. Established in 1921, the MTA was founded by a group of sporting camp and hotel owners to promote tourism primarily from New York and Philadelphia. The State at that time did not promote tourism. MTA operates the State owned visitor centers under contract to the MOT. Under a separate contract, the MTA supplies road maps and Maine Invites You which are used by the MOT as fulfillment pieces for advertising and general inquiries. The mission of the MTA is to serve as a unifying organization representing the common interests of the tourism industry; to create economic opportunities for the membership by helping visitors and the general public become more aware of the unique quality of the Maine experience. Additional questions can be directed to (207) 623-0363.
